2017 was a great year for television and Mr Robot, Twin Peaks: The Return, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Deuce, Stranger Things, Game of Thrones and The Crown are just a few shows which didn’t even make my Top Twenty.
So, without further ado, here’s my list beginning at number twenty:
20. The X Factor (UK)
Any of you reading this thinking that The X-Factor is beneath you, well that’s the part of your brain that is going wrong. Now in its fourteenth year, Simon Cowell’s talent show was the best ever; it makes me laugh, it makes me cry and it maketh my heart swell with pride for the underdog.
In addition to being incrediby well-made, it subconsciously writes hero’s journeys week after week as shy, flawed, broken and over-the-hill performers battle their inner demons to produce auditions like this:
In any other year, twenty-year-old Grace Davies‘ stunning songwriting skills and haunting vocals would have been enough to win, but Rak Su – four unlikely rappers from Watford won the country’s hearts with their catchy earworms, melodies and infectious enthusiasm.
With nicest man in the world, Parisian Kevin Davy White going toe-to-toe all the way to the semi-final, week in, week out these two rivals battled it out, often writing number one records within the space of a week.
In writing their own material, Grace and Rak Su have changed the talent show forever. Bring on December!
