Speaking of American Horror Story, its co-creator and showrunner Ryan Murphy’s next collaboration with his leading lady, Sarah Paulson will be set in the same universe as One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest named Ratched.

Nurse Ratched was, of course, the tyrannical nurse in the celebrated 1975 Milos Forman movie which won actress (and sister to Murder, She Wrote’s Jessica) Louise Fletcher the Academy Award for her portrayal.

The twist here is that Nurse Ratched is a sadistic killer, which – while the lunatic asylum makes a great horror location – I’m not quite sure if I buy. She was certainly a battle-axe and definitely a little eek beek curly wurly cuckoo but I don’t think she’s full-on psycho-killer quesque c’est.

Also, I’m not sure the source material is quite the right place for such a character evolution. Bates Motel (the obvious example of another recent small screen adaptation) Norman Bates’ journey makes sense for a horr-igin story. Nurse Ratched… not so much.

All I can say is that first time writer Evan Romansky’s script must be mighty good and that, if anyone can pull it off, the best actress in TV right now, Sarah Paulson can.

Murphy will direct the pilot and probably serve as Exec Producer alongside One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest original producer Michael Douglas.

There’s no release date yet, but I guess we’ll get to see if Ratched “gets what’s coming to her” in the first of two already-commissioned Netflix seasons in 2018 or 2019.
