Sons of Anarchy spin-off Mayans MC, which follows members of a Latino motorcycle club is to undergo major rewrites, reshoots and recasting of major roles.

Currently starring Edward James Olmos, (Blade Runner) and John Ortiz, (Togetherness) the FX series will focus on the exploits of Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes (JD Pardo – Revolution) a prospect in the Mayans Motorcycle Club.

Set in the present day, in the aftermath of Jax Teller’s death, it will take place on the California/Mexico border so expect plenty of politicking and trolling from Trump fans about the dangers of Mexicans.

This new location means Mayans MC will be a world away from the original series’ setting of Northern California in 2014 but does leave the door open for Mayans, Reapers and Grim Bastards to pop up as guests. We may see Chibs, Tig, original Mayan Marcus Alvarez (above) and even Jimmy Smit’s Nero live to ride another day.

Sons of Anarchy showrunner Kurt Sutter has been removed from directing duties and relegated to a writing-only role and it comes as no surprise: Sutter’s forays into directing SoA always saw five minute montages to rock ballads and his last show, The Bastard Executioner – a laughable attempt at medieval fantasy – was canned after one season.

It’s important to note that even Sons of Anarchy underwent major reshoots when Scott Glenn (The Leftovers) was replaced by Ron Perlman as Clay Morrow. Glenn is an incredible actor, but sometimes the cap (helmet) just doesn’t fit.

Norberto Barba has been brought in to direct and executive produce and his wealth of experience on Preacher, The Path, Grimm and The Strain will surely save the pilot.

Mayans MC reshoots are taking place this summer and a very tentative Fall 2017 slot has been mentioned. I think that’s unrealistic but here’s hoping.
