After confirming he has finished writing his script for Star Wars 9, J.J. Abrams has revealed that Apple and HBO are reportedly in a bidding war for his new show; Demimonde. Not much is known about the project but let’s start with that title. According to Merriam-Webster define Demimonde as:

1: a class of women on the fringes of respectable society supported by wealthy lovers; also: their world. b: the world of prostitution. 2: a distinct circle or world that is often an isolated part of a larger world. a night in the disco demimonde; especially: one having low reputation or prestige.

So, in typical Abrams-Lindelof style, there’s a double meaning already. Just from the title, we know the series will be predominantly female-led and will feature two worlds… Then, hey presto – a synopsis is revealed:

[It’s about] a family — consisting of a mother who works as a scientist, her husband and their young daughter — who all get into a terrible car crash. After the mother winds up in a coma, her daughter begins digging through her experiments in the basement and winds up transporting to another land amid a world’s battle against a monstrous, oppressive force. Her father then follows her into this new world.

The synopsis sounds pretty regular Hero’s Journey stuff, but this is J.J. so it will feature great character development, mind-bending ideas, stunning visuals and huge mysteries.

After dominating the silver screen by rebooting the two greatest sci-fi franchises, the über-talented writer and director behind The Force Awakens is heading back to the small screen. And while J.J.’s back writing Demimonde, he’s also got the unenviable task of saving the Star Wars fan-chise after Rian Johnson royally fucked it in the arse.

What did you think of The Last Jedi, Artoo?

While J.J. is prolific, with big boys like HBO possibly on board, don’t expect Demimonde much before the year 2020
