The last season of Broadchurch – the excellent, Dorset-set detective show starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman was also Chris Chibnall’s last.

The writer/producer has made the jump to replace Steven Moffat at the controls of the TARDIS as Doctor Who showrunner – and he’s taken Broadchurch’s can’t-take-your-eyes-off-her Jodie Whittaker with him to play The Doctor.

After a courtroom-based sophomore season, Broadchurch’s third season harked back to the suspense of its freshman season. The storyline centred around the rape of Trish Winterman and was a rollercoaster whodunnit where everyone in the town was a possible suspect.

Just like 2017 was the year of strong women overcoming turmoil and an awakening to the true extent and horror of sexual harrassment, Broadchurch season 3 belonged to the women: Julie Hesmondhalgh, Jodie Whittaker and Olivia Colman gave incredibly touching performances. Not even Lenny Henry’s awful acting could detract from that!

Chris Chibnall and Jodie Whittaker return for Doctor Who in the fall.
