You may have been as dismayed as I was when writer-producer Noah Hawley said that with writing duties on season two of Legion and a feature film in the works, Fargo’s third outing may have been its last… but there’s good news on the snowy, North Dakotan horizon:
Enter chairman of the show’s broadcaster FX, John Langraf who told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, California:
“Noah Hawley, who has become quite a busy bee… has told us that he has an idea that excited me enormously for a fourth cycle of Fargo and the plan is to have that ready in 2019. The anticipation is there will be another cycle of Fargo in 2019.”
Hawley himself later added “Unfortunately, I can’t really tell you anything about that… It’s still early for me. I really love that world. But it’s still very much a question for me of making sure there’s something left to say about it, and balancing tone. I never want it to be something that people go, ‘Oh that thing, it’s the accents and the funny crime show.’ Yeah, it’s still very much a work in progress.”
While season one of that funny crime show was good (and Hawley’s writing naïveté showed) season two was an absolute joy to behold and season three was a less thrilling but more cerebral mini-masterpiece.
Now that rumors of Fargo’s premature end have been dumped in the snowy wasteland of Minnesota, all we gotta do is wait for the spring thaw.
