Anybody worth their salt knows The Exorcist sequels are cursed, so when Fox announced today that it had placed an order for The Exorcist Season 2, demons everywhere spread their wings and cackled a cacophony of phony laughter.
On their phones. Phony Sony phones.
The first season began hella strongly with a superbly directed pilot under the watchful eye and safe hands of Rupert Wyatt (The Planet of the Apes reboot) but as the season wore on, the story relied on more tired horror tropes – what was fresh in 1973, ain’t necessarily so in 2016 and 2017. Just check out the pilot for American Gods (which also received a second season order this week) as evidence that TV has surpassed cinema in storytelling excellence.
Fox has promised to take The Exorcist Season 2 in a new direction, but the puzzling thing is why wait til six months after the end of a low-rating season to announce a second series?
Word on the street is that original possessee, Linda Blair wants in on the action, so if she joins the excellent cast of Alfonso Herrera, Ben Daniels, Geena Davis and Alan Ruck…
then expect heads to spin!
